Yoga Swami is on “pause” until divine time…

COMMUNITY LETTER FROM DAWN

Dear Community,

I extend my deepest gratitude for all of your efforts to preserve the sacred space of the Yoga Swami yurt, which has been cultivated since 2005. Over one year ago, as many of you may remember, the survival of Yoga Swami was in jeopardy and the community gathered with compassion and dignity to form the “Save the Space” campaign to ensure its existence. The recent issues around city building codes have once again threatened the existence of Yoga Swami and tested the union of our community. As a result, our strength has amplified.

The momentum created by the extraordinary involvement from you this week has spawned critical conversation around the sustainability of future Encinitas structures. Your devotion, creativity and steadfast support generated a collective consciousness never seen before by Encinitas City Hall. Over 150 community members appeared in the City Hall meeting this week to plant the seed of reformation for the future of eco-structures worldwide. A petition was signed by over1,000 people across the nation who wrote heartfelt messages on behalf of environmental awareness. As a result, the Encinitas Environmental Commission has formed a subcommittee directed with the task of code reformation for yurts in Encinitas. Nearly 50,000 people witnessed the development of the week’s events with the yurt through international email blasts, web posts, tweets, Facebook conversations and videos. The drop of our local community voice has created a rippling effect in the future of green building.

While the global possibilities of this great movement have just begun, the local conclusion is that Yoga Swami is not allowed to pursue the permit process and must still be removed from 912 S. Coast Hwy 101.
While it is the divine time for transformation for Yoga Swami, our teachers, patrons, and longtime supporters, I believe that the magnitude of this movement has served the Highest intention imaginable. 5 years ago, Yoga Swami was created based on the ideals of community support, stewardship to Mother Earth, sustainability, and simply being in the world in a different way. We have upheld these ideals beyond expectation. As a result, space has been created in my heart for reformation of old policy and development of new and beautiful artistry.

We will continue to create community and a place for sacred practice, maintain cultivation of love, beauty, peace and harmony for the city of Encinitas and persevere in upholding natural, organic, eco-conscious surroundings as we intend to resume regular class schedule in a new location. Please refer to the Yoga Swami website for updates on our new location and schedule. I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience and please know that I am working diligently to make sure the transition is smooth and seamless for everyone involved.

I wish to express deep gratitude for all of the Yoga Swami teachers who helped to maintain the sacredness of the yurt, stood in their integrity and embraced the flow through all the shifts. You have provided the community an example of how to lead with compassion and surrender through challenge.

In addition, I would like to thank Council Woman, Teresa Barth for her support. She stands with our community to create sustainable living in Encinitas. Please support Council Woman Barth at the Mayor Elect City Council meeting Tuesday, December 14, simply by being present. Also, Tom Curriden, Principal Planner, Mark Beauchamp, Building Dept., and George McNeley, Deputy Fire Marshall for their time and attention.

May you practice lightly upon the Earth.

Love,
Dawn Singer, Owner of Yoga Swami and the yurt

The Yoga Swami yurt has been sacred space for the community for the past 5 years. Yoga Swami was created based on  the ideals of community support, stewardship to Mother Earth, sustainability, and simply being in the world in a different way. Although the City of Encinitas gave us verbal permission to construct the yurt in 2005, City Hall has now required us to meet current building codes, which from our perspective, do not support sustainable eco-structures. On Thursday, December 9th, 2010 we are being forced to remove the yurt.

As the owner of the yurt and Yoga Swami, this is evidently inspiring me to create change and prosperity for the future of sustainable eco-structures. While honoring the guidance of the Universe, I recognize that some events are inevitable and merely serve to encourage new conscious endeavors.

As a result of the closure of the yurt, there is now much opportunity for growth on local, national and global levels. If you wish to be educated or take action, please consider the following:

• Get educated on sustainable building:

o http://www.networkearth.org/naturalbuilding/codes.html

• Get educated on Green Yoga – join in the discussion for merging conventional politics with sustainable evolution and revolution

o www.greenyoga.org

• Write a letter to the City Council

o http://www.ci.encinitas.ca.us/Government/MayorACC/MayorCC/

• Attend City Council meetings – be active in the community to create support for sustainable eco-structures

o http://www.ci.encinitas.ca.us/Government/MayorACC/MayorCC/

• Vote – make educated choices for City Council

We have an obligation to manage our limited resources so that we proceed down a sustainable course…we do not have the option of “outlawing” the most sustainable approaches to building. Yet, the lack of a larger context in code development and application has allowed this regulatory type of “mismanagement” of resources to pass unnoticed and unquestioned for decades. These are the issues of the next century that will be imposed on us whether we ignore them now or not.” – David Eisenberg, Sustainability and the Building Codes

Above all, the yurt represents a community with intention of sustaining mother earth and humanity. The spiraling energy created by the yurt and its inhabitants will only catalyze expansive creativity and Light. The legacy of Yoga Swami lives.

We will continue to create community and a place for sacred practice, maintain cultivation of love, beauty, peace and harmony for the city of Encinitas, and persevere in upholding natural, organic, eco-conscious surroundings as we intend to resume regular class schedule in a new location.

We hold our beloved Encinitas, City Hall (including the city council members) in honor, realizing that their intentions, as well as ours, are inherently good.

Thank you for the love and light you have contributed to the yurt.

Peace,

Dawn Singer
